Aftershave and Pre-Shave

To help protect skin before and after shaving, it is important that you use pre-shave and aftershave. Both products have many benefits and can be an important part of your grooming regime. Many brands offer ranges of pre-shave foams and oils and of aftershave splashes and balms . All are designed to protect the skin while leaving a light pleasant fragrance and have moisturising properties.

What is pre-shave?

Pre-shave helps to soften the beard to make it easier to cut. Using pre-shave helps to stop your skin becoming irritated after shaving and can significantly help to reduce your skin's sensitivity.

If you have dry skin, choose an oil based product as this will have more moisturising properties. Products that include castor oil and olive oil can help to reduce dryness and irritation and keep your face smooth and soft.

If you have oily skin, opt for a foam pre-shave , which will be enriched with lavender oil or sunflower seed oil. This helps to reduce razor burn without clogging your pores and leaving you feeling greasy.

What is aftershave?

Aftershave is a moisturising product that helps to reduce shaving irritation and leaves a light, pleasant scent. A moisturising aftershave is designed to rehydrate the skin after the discomfort and irritation it endures while you are shaving.

A benefit of aftershave is that it leaves your skin soft and smooth, but it can also help to reduce redness, irritation and the chance of razor bumps.

Opt for an aftershave splash that contains alcohol if your skin doesn't suffer too badly from irritation after shaving as this will help to kill bacteria. Alcohol-based aftershaves also tend to retain the fragrance for longer.

If your skin needs a bit more TLC, opt for an aftershave that is rich in essential oils such as aloe vera or jojoba oil to help give extra moisture where you really need it.
